REVIEW: Ram Mount X-Grip Tablet Mount
I was looking for the perfect mounting solution for my iPad to use for navigation and didn’t know where to start. Of course after checking out the online influencers and gear reviews I found Ram Mounts. They have a great range of solutions for all sorts of applications. I snagged the Ram X-Grip Drill-Down Double Ball Mount back in April 2019 for all our upcoming trips to Idaho, Oregon, and Northwest Overland Rally.
Installation:
I choose the ball mounting system for the quick release/install as well as the ability to transition from ball to ball easily. To mount the ball on my dash I had to remove the center console and wheel barrel to get access to the underside. After eyeballing the placement and checking clearance on the underside I drilled the hardware holes. Once the ball portion was mounted the rest quickly followed. I would say in total from the removal to the re-installation of the engine cover that it took about 15 minutes to install.
Use:
After a little less than a year of using the mount system i’m very happy with the purchase. It’s main function is for navigation and it has worked well for routed directions through Google Maps or route tracking on Gaia GPS. It also comes in handy for the quick google search if a debate arises or if we need to look up some detail on our next destination.
It’s been very sturdy on and off-road as long as the arm mounting knob has been tightened down enough. It doesn’t take a body builder, but the tighter the better. We also use our iPad for a little Netflix and chill in the evenings or on rainy days. I’ll be purchasing a second ball mount in the near future to mount in the rear of the van where we can watch from the bed or the gaucho couch.
Pros:
-Easy installation of ball connection.
-Easy installation/removal of iPad.
-Very sturdy on the trail with the ability to quickly adjust.
Cons:
-The only real con of installing my iPad is that I have to remove my OtterBox hard case.
-It would be nice if Ram Mount had a case with a quick connection, but maybe that’s down the line in their product development process.
